application instructions
PREPARATION
Before applying, please review our info pages. If it's clear that you haven’t, your application will be declined. Also, please note that all apps must be finished within five days. When you complete an app, reply below it to say so. After five days, unfinished applications will be archived, and pending accounts will be deleted. You are always welcome to register again, though!

Finally please note that you are required complete your mini-profile (the info behind the avatar) before acceptance. You may do so in your User Control Panel in the Profile Info section. The only fields you can leave blank are the plot ad and tracker. Don't forget to link to your application!

BANS & RATIOS
We try to provide as much freedom as possible, but sometimes we must impose bans to preserve canon or fix ratios. Visit the FACECLAIM to see gender ratios and the ROSTER to see usergroup ratios.

Realism limits: Vampires and werewolves face strong prejudices that prevent them from attending Hogwarts and holding many jobs. These difficulties, as well as those inherent to their condition, should be addressed in your app so that we can be sure you understand site canon. Professors and heads of Ministry and Mungo's departments must be at least 30 and must be qualified for their positions. Remember: the younger they are, trickier this is to pull off realistically! We do pend/deny apps for realism issues.

Site limits: To help spread the love, members may only play one Hogwarts staff character and one rare character type (purebloods, metamorphamagus, animagus, part-Veela, seers, etc.) per 5 characters. Please refrain from "doubling-up" on other special skills or species, such as a veela-turned-werewolf; we don't like special snowflakes or Sues.

Bans: There are no current bans in place.

FORMAT
We only provide a freeform app template. It's easier for everyone, because you can do whatever you want - a traditional app, an interview, a diary, or even a biography. However, we're not looking for simple lists or likes/dislikes. We want complete sentences, proper capitalization, and some substance! We also request that you only add coding to your app in moderation. Don't alter the existing code, make sure it's easy to read, and keep it simple. For the app title and subtitle please do:

Title: LAST, FIRST MIDDLE INITIAL
Subtitle: playername | playby name

If necessary, [cw] tagging should be listed at the start of the title.

Please keep your application a reasonable length. Staff is busy, and we put a lot of effort into reading applications closely. We don't want to spend hours reading one person's application, and longer applications will not be processed as quickly as more succinct ones.

FIELDS
There are eight fields next to the avatar (200x300 px only) in the application. We've provided detailed instructions below to help you complete each correctly. We use these fields to track ratios and are looking for succinct, specific details. Please read carefully.

USERGROUP: Choose from one of our nine usergroups HERE.

OCCUPATION: This is where you type your character's specific occupation. Be succinct and don't sweat the details. Some examples of occupations are potions professor, architect, and the Hog's Head dishwasher. Keep it to one line of information.

HOUSE & STATUS: This is where you type your character's house or former house and their educational status. Some examples are as follows: Gryffindor alumnus, Slytherin dropout, Beauxbatons alumna. Characters should attend schools that provide education to residents of the country where they came of age. You may invent a school if canon hasn't provided one, but please don't contradict existing canon regarding known wizarding schools.

AGE: Spell out your character's age.

BLOOD STATUS: Your character's blood status must be one of the following: pure, tainted, half, muggleborn, muggle. More info on blood status may be found in the FAQ. Remember that pureblooded families have become very rare (and considered very bigoted) since the days of Harry Potter.

SPECIES AND/OR ABILITIES: For most characters, this field will simply read "witch" or "wizard" or the gender-nonspecific "wix." However, if your character has special abilities or is non-human or part-human, include that here instead after reading the bestiary in full. Werewolves, vampires, and animagi should all note whether they are registered with the Ministry. Animagi should not note their animal form here. Be sure to include how/why your character developed their skill or status and how it impacts their life. No student animagi will be permitted.

WANDWOOD, WANDCORE: Thanks to Pottermore, we have access to lots of info about wand woods and cores. It's a lot of nerdy fun to pick one out, and it can say quite a bit about your character! We suggest using the HP WIKI as your guide. An example of this field is as follows: blackthorn, thestral hair. Vampires should note whether they possess a wand or not.

PLAYBY FIRST AND LAST: List the first and last name of the actor or model you plan to use to represent your character. We love diversity amongst our characters; please consider using a less common or PoC playby!
FOOTER
At the bottom of the application code, there is a footer that requires a few important bits of information. We've provided definitions of each so you know exactly what we're looking for!

NAME: Type your OOC name/tag name/alias. Please note that JACFC culture tends toward simple, name-like aliases (e.g., Marie, Arwen, etc.) rather than usernames (e.g., bookworm, potterfan64, etc).

AGE: Type your age in numbers. If you do not want to specify your age, simply indicate "18+" if you are over age 18. If you are under age 18, you cannot join JACFC. Refrain from anything other than a numeric answer.

TIMEZONE: To help others know when they might expect you online, please indicate the timezone you are usually in. Please use abbreviations or offset notation to save space and to ensure folks from all around the world can understand what you mean!

FEEDBACK: Please select whether you would like public (i.e., posted below your app) or private (i.e., sent via PM) feedback on your application. Please note that regardless of what type of feedback you select, some template processing notices will be posted publicly (e.g., to indicate processing, to explain the requested character review process, etc). Applications that fail to specify a preference or that list anything other than "private" or "public" will be processed publicly by default. Just pick one of those words.

This is where you type your application! Use the code < p > (without spaces) to insert paragraph breaks. You are permitted to add formatting to this section of the application, but please only do so if you know what you're doing. Plain text is always fine, so don't feel pressured to add something fancy. However, flashy coding that breaks the application code or that makes your application difficult to read is not fine, so keep that in mind if you do want to get fancy. Stay away from gifs or other distracting images, bright colors, ornate fonts, tiny fonts (do not use anything smaller than the default), and large blocks of text in italics or bold. Finally, please keep in mind that the staff doesn't really have time to help fix application coding issues, so please add coding only if you can handle it on your own.

Please note that although we do not have a required word count, we must rely on your application to evaluate your writing ability and your character. Remember that admins need to understand your character (i.e., his/her personality and history) and must be confident that you're a strong writer, so write enough to allow us to do both. We highly recommend that you at least fill this field until it begins to scroll. Any less than that, and chances are slim that you've given us enough to evaluate your application effectively. That said, a very lengthy application will not be processed quickly. Say what you need to say, but please don't write us a novel!

Good luck! We look forward to reading your application and to rp'ing with you soon!

PS: Please proofread and make sure you've followed all the application directions!
It'll help you get accepted faster and it makes the lives of admins easier.
