In any case, she sent him an owl after she returned to Britain, and they've been sending vaguely flirtatious letters back and forth ever since.
This gent comes across as the perfect package. He's charming and well-spoken, with a knack for storytelling. Though he's only middle-aged (by vampire standards, at least), he's done a lot of traveling and experienced a lot of interesting things.
He's not as squeaky clean as he might seem, though. Though he's not necessarily a bad person at heart, he has had to do a lot of unsavory things to get by. Legitimate jobs for vampires are not abundant in any part of the world, and he likely found himself thralling unsuspecting humans, stealing wands and committing various other crimes just to put blood on the table. Though he might have an interest in travel, his frequent moves were more due to a need to avoid the law than a desire to see new places.
Sensing an opportunity for a fresh start, the Criminal jumped at Coraline's invitation for a visit. Maybe the weight of taking advantage of people for decades has started to wear at him, or perhaps he's just grown weary of moving every couple of years, but in any case, he's decided to make a go at an honest life.
Coraline's had a rough couple of years, and she'll willing to overlook a lot of red flags for true love (she's a bit of a hopeless romantic underneath that rigid, Victorian exterior). Still, the criminal's past has to catch up to him at some point. Not to mention, the outlook for vampires in England isn't really as great as Coraline might have described in her letters (see the bestiary for more info, if you're not familiar with JACFC vampire lore), and making an honest living is bound to be a challenge for someone's whose resume almost exclusively includes illegal activities.
Perhaps he gives it an honest try (and somehow manages to keep his past a secret) and he and Coraline live happily ever after, or more likely, he falls back into his old pattern and there's plenty of drama to be had. In either case, I have tons of these ideas for these two, and I'd love to see how things play out!
I have Oscar Isaac listed as the playby for now (because he and Jessica Chastain make a very attractive couple), but some other options I’ve considered are: Javier Bardem, Aidan Turner, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Idris Elba. I’m totally flexible if there’s someone else you love, as long as you keep it to someone in their mid 30s or older.
